Methods

MESKA – Method for the Assessment of Safety Culture for the Regulatory Authority (e.g. Faßmann & Beck, 2018)

The MESKA method (Method for the Assessment of Safety Culture for the Regulatory Authority) focuses on the abilities and strengths of managers who, through their leadership behavior, work toward their employees' safety-oriented behavior. The method provides two methods for analysis and assessment of the safety culture. In addition to a shortened analysis, which is carried out during "everyday evaluations" as it were along the way (en passant procedure), a detailed analysis and evaluation of the safety culture is offered on the basis of an in-depth analysis (independent analysis).

The strengths and weaknesses of leadership behavior, which are related to safety-oriented behavior and demonstrated by the analysis, will be shown in the final phase and conveyed through leadership improvement measures.

SIKUMETH – Safety Culture Methods (e.g. Schöbel, Klostermann, Lassalle, Beck & Manzey, 2017)

The SIKUMETH procedure (Safety Culture Methods) consists of a set of methods that, building on each other, shows the "basic assumptions" of an organization that affect the safety-related behavior within the organization. In addition to questionnaire surveys, interviews and workshops with employees and executives are conducted. Furthermore, literature reviews of the operating rules as well as inspections and observations of "everyday activities" are possible components of the analysis.

After completion of the analysis, the strengths and weaknesses of the organizational and safety culture are presented on the basis of "cultural dynamics". Furthermore the basic assumptions derived from the “cultural dynamics” are worked out. On the basis of the analyzed "cultural dynamics", the managers and employees of the company are taught which organization-specific circumstances lead to particular strengths and weaknesses in the safety-related behavior.

Finally, improvement measures are developed which, in combination with the already existing basic assumptions, contribute to an improvement of the safety-related behavior of employees and managers.
